Strengthen and Have Fun!
Hey, fitness lovers! If you’re looking to strengthen your midsection, or just looking to give your midsection some love without having to enter a gym, you’re in the right place! Not only are home core workouts effective, but they can also be a lot of fun! So grab your mat (or a soft spot on the floor) and maybe a bottle of water, and let’s get started by discussing some great ideas for working out your core at home, and you can do in your living room.
Why should you work on your core?
Let’s be frank: your core is not just a washboard stomach or a six-pack. This is your body’s powerhouse! A strong core helps improve your balance, stability, and posture. And it doesn’t hurt if you look hot in your favorite tank top or bathing suit. Think of it this way: every time you lift groceries, chase your kids, or just stand, you use your core. So by developing strength in your core, you will be able to perform daily tasks more easily and stimulate overall fitness.
Fun & Functional Core Exercises
Now that we have covered the importance of a strong core, let’s dive into some excellent core exercises you can do at home. The best part, you don’t even need any fancy equipment, only yourself and may be some music to get you pumped.
1. Plank It Out
Planks are the king of all core workouts. Starting in a push-up position with your head and spine aligned, hold for as long as possible. You will feel your core engage the longer you hold. If regular planks start to become too easy, consider side planks or even lifting one leg at a time!
2. Russian Twists
Get a water bottle or even a pillow if you want to have fun. Sit on the ground, lean back a little, lift your feet off the floor, and twist your torso side to side. This is a great exercise that works your obliques (the muscles on the sides of your abdomen).
3. Bicycle Crunches
They say variety is the spice of life, and that goes for workouts too! Lie on your back, bring your knees up, and pedal your legs as if you are riding a bike while bringing your shoulder towards the knee opposite. And, don’t forget to engage your abs!
4. Superman Pose
This one is a favorite especially if you’re feeling super! Lie facedown and extend your arms and legs. Raise your arms and legs – as well as your chest – off of the ground and hold for a moment. This move targets the lower back, the glutes and the whole core – and you get to feel like Superman!
5. Heel Taps
Now, lay down and raise your knees, so your shins are parallel to the floor. From here, just let your arms hang by your sides and tap each heel on the ground one tap at a time. This one is tougher than you think, but effective in targeting those pesky lower abs!
Putting It All Together
Now that you have several exercises to choose from, let’s create a quicker routine for working your core at home! Aim for 30 seconds for each exercise, and rest between if needed. Aim for 2-3 rounds of each full circuit. You will have a nice 15-20 minute workout in the comfort of your own home!
Here’s a quick sample routine you could follow:
- Plank: 30 seconds
- Russian Twist: 30 seconds
- Bicycle Crunch: 30 seconds
- Superman: 30 seconds
- Heel Taps: 30 seconds
Rest for 30-60 seconds and repeat!
Keeping It Fun!
Remember, the most important thing is to be consistent and have fun! You might also want to think about either cranking your favorite playlist, or challenge a friend or family member to join you in the workout. Many people find that when exercise is social, it will change your perspectives it’s a chore or necessary element of living healthy, to something you actually look forward to!
Finally, I always love to remind the readers to be mindful of your body. If something feels wrong or painful do not hesitate to modify or leave it out. There is no shame in going at your own pace!
Let’s Finish it Off
There you go! Working out your core at home does not have to be complicated and boring. It is quite easy to add in some core work and, with some effort and creativity, you can build a strong core that will help you with everything in life! Go ahead and roll out that mat, turn on your favourite music, and get to it!
