Greetings, fitness friends! If you’re anything like me, you’ve felt the rush of adrenaline when you hit your groove in a long run or push through the final few minutes of a spin class. But what if I told you that you can enhance your endurance game by simply alternation between high-power sprints and small rest period? That’s right! Let’s talk in our “Why HIIT is the Secret Weapon for Endurance Athletes” blog about High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and the reasons it is a fantastic tool for endurance athletes.
The Trick: Mix It Up
As endurance athletes, we frequently become stuck in the monotonous rhythm position. Whether we run, bike or swim, the aim is to hold a moderate pace for a longer duration. With this said, steady-state workouts have their place in your training repertoire, and what could be just as productive (if not more) is performing HIIT to change how your body sees long and dull workouts.
When I first started doing HIIT, I was hesitant about it. Could doing short bursts really make a difference? However after a few weeks of adding HIIT into my mix, I felt stronger, faster, and more resilient than ever! Long runs no longer felt like an uphill struggle – rather, they were achieved in a breeze (and with confidence!)
Build and Boost Your Aerobic Capacity
So, what is so great HIIT for endurance? Simply put, HIIT improves your aerobic and anaerobic capacity. While traditional long-distance or endurance training primarily trains aerobic endurance, HIIT will train both energy systems. During short periods of hard sprint, you are using fast-twitch muscle fibers and improving your power output, so when it is time to begin those long-style races, you’ll be ready to perform because your stamina won’t give out and you will be faster too!
Better yet, science supports HIIT! Research has shown VO₂ max, the maximum amount of oxygen that individuals can use during maximal exercise, can be improved by athletes doing HIIT. Put another way, you’ll be able to run faster and longer, with less effort. Wahoo! What a win!
Time Effectiveness: More Results in Less Time
Let’s face it, life can be crazy busy. With work, family obligations and everything else that happens, finding time to train sometimes feels impossible. This is where the beauty of HIIT comes in! You can easily get an efficient and effective workout in 20 to 30 minutes.
I remember a time I had a crazy week where I was not sure how I was going to fit my runs in. So I turned to HIIT in a quick form that consisted of 30 seconds of max effort running and 1 minute of walking. Within 20 minutes of HIIT, I accomplished what would take me an hour of steady running. Plus, I got to enjoy a smoothie afterwards!
Boost Recovery and Prevent Burnout
As endurance athletes, we all experience the burnout that comes from training for long races, physically and mentally. Training for long races can lead to fatigue, physically and mentally. HIIT can help recover faster in these situations! This is not only provides a break from the repetition of long-distance training, but also allows for recovery while still pushing intensity and the scope of the moment.
HIIT days, not only part of a long-distance training program, help in providing invigorating variety to your training program, keeping your training enjoyable. Kind of like a little fun “cheat day” in your training calendar! I promise, your body will appreciate the different stimulus by virtue, and it feels refreshing too!
Conclusion: Find Your Balance
I want to be clear—endurance athletes must incorporate long, steady-state runs and rides into their training to develop their endurance base. But, if you really want to realize your potential as an endurance athlete, give High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) a try. Remember, like any fitness regimen, finding what works for you is about balance—using speed playdays in conjunction with slow-distance workouts will help round you out as an athlete.
So, the next time you tie your shoes or hop on a bike, think about how you can fit in HIIT intervals. You may be only one sprint away from your breakout performance!
Happy training everyone, Discover with why HIIT is the secret-weapon for endurance athletes and just keep pushing your limits! And let me know how HIIT impacts your endurance pursuits.
