What Are Superfoods, Anyway?

First things first, let’s unpack what superfoods are. Although there’s no official definition, superfoods are generally foods that provide us with plenty of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They can be thought of as your body’s best friend! They allow your body to gain health benefits that improve one’s wellbeing and help to overcome fitness goals successfully.

Why Superfoods?

So now that we’ve established what superfoods are, why should we care about adding superfoods to our diet, especially if we live to exercise? The answer is easy: everything we ingest either fuels or weighs us down in our training and/or workout! Superfoods are extremely good fuel. They boost energy, improve recovery, and even lift the way one feels. Furthermore, they can deliver an abundance of nutrients without the additional calories.

My Personal Favorites: Stand Out Superfoods

Alright, let’s talk favorites! Here are some superfoods that I love in my own fitness journey:

  • Chia Seeds: Tiny but mighty! Chia seeds are full of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein. I love throwing them into smoothies or overnight oats. They keep me satisfied and fueled for those awesome morning workouts.
  • Blueberries: Blueberries aren’t just some of the tastiest berries, they’re also full of antioxidants! Handful of blueberries is an awesome post-workout snack as they help reduce muscle soreness. YUM.
  • Quinoa: Quinoa is a complete protein, meaning it has all nine essential amino acids, which is awesome. I just toss it in salads, make quinoa bowls, or even a base for veggie burgers. Very versatile.
  • Kale: I know, I know. Kale is often the poster child for health food snobbery. But hear me out! Toss kale into a smoothie, sautéed with garlic, or massaged with a little olive oil and lemon juice? Absolutely delicious! Not to mention it is an amazing source of vitamins A, C, and K.
  • Turmeric: This potent yellow spice is known for its anti-inflammatory characteristics. I like to add it to my morning golden latte, and it has been a major influence on my recovery from hard workouts.

Easy Ideas to Start Having Superfoods In Your Life

The best part about superfoods is that they don’t have to be complicated! Here are a few easy ways to include them in your everyday meals.

  1. Smoothie Booster: It’s easy to add a scoop of spirulina or a tablespoon of chia seeds to your smoothie in the morning. The change in flavor won’t be too dramatic, and you can pack in the nutrients fast.
  2. Power-Packed Salads: Top off your salad with some sliced avocado (healthy fat), nuts (protein), and seeds (fiber). These extra toppings will give your salad some extra flavor and nutritional power!
  3. Snack Smart: Instead of chips, make a large batch of energy balls with oats, nut butter, and a sprinkle of cacao power. You’ll satisfy that sweet tooth while fueling your body!
  4. Try a Superfood Bowl: Food-in-a-bowl meals are all the rage for a reason. Mixing quinoa or brown rice with your favorite superfoods, roasted veggies, and a protein, makes an easy and filling meal that still packs a nutritional punch.
