Your Friendly Guide to a Fitter, Happier You
Hello fitness friends! Let’s talk about something that is important to all of us – health! Whether you’re new to fitness or a pro, good health tips are like a friendly GPS in your health and wellness journey, steering you in the right direction.
So, make yourself a cozy drink, and let’s discuss a few simple tips that can help you be the best you – physically and mentally.
1.Develop a Positive Attitude
I know this sounds a little fluffy, but developing a positive mental attitude is a major factor in overall health. Practice being grateful, practice mindfulness or perform simple breathing exercises. When you feel good mentally, you will probably gravitate toward healthy choices.
As a personal anecdote, during a particularly difficult week I started to actively write down three things I was grateful for every single night. Doing this little act turned my entire week around and made me realize that even the smallest joys could have a huge impact on my emotional well-being. Lastly, remember that your mental health it just as important as your physical health.
2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Have you ever experienced a sluggish feeling that made it hard to focus? You may be dehydrated! Water is needed for every function in our body as it is an essential piece for flushing toxins and transporting nutrients. So, keep a water bottle near you – it should be like your sidekick.
I aim to drink about 8 glasses of water a day; if you need more, that’s ok too! If plain water seems boring, which it can, infuse water with fruit or herbs. Lemon, mint, or cucumber can take simple water next level.
3. Move Your Body in Joyful Ways
For some, regular exercise does not have to involve miserable hours in the gym or long runs if that’s not your thing. The key is to move your body in joyful ways. Boogie, bike, hike, or sign up for a fun yoga class.
I remember my first Zumba class, it was like a dance party and I was sweating while laughing! When you enjoy the activity so much it will never feel like work and before you know it will be building strength and endurance as though it was easy!
4. Feeds Your Body With Love
First things first, let’s talk about food! Nourishing your body does not translate to eating boring salads and choking down kale smoothies (unless that is your jam)! It’s about finding what balance works for you. Eat lots of colourful vegetables, whole-grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. Try to be colourful on your plate – A rainbow of colourful nutrients.
Personal story time! At one point, I thought going on an all-juice diet would give me lots of energy and leave me feeling light. Spoiler alert: it left me feeling weak and cranky. Now, I try to incorporate more whole foods and to make meals that both fuel my body and ignite my taste buds. Of course, everything in moderation and treat yourself sometimes!
5. Rest and Reset
Sleep is often the black horse of good health. It is during our sleep that our bodies heal, restore, and prepare for the next day. Sleep becomes more restorative in a regular cycle of 7-9 hours per night of good sleep. Create a bed time routine to signal your body it’s time to downshift. Dim the lights, shut the screens off and read a book!
What I have learned over and over is that when I skimp on sleep I am grumpier and less productive the next day. Allow yourself an occasional sleep-in day, your body will thank you!
6. Connect with Others
Being healthy is so much more fun when you can share it with friends and family. Find a local fitness class, get a workout buddy, or plan family outings that revolve around activity. Having that connection helps support you on the days that motivation is low.
One of my favorite things is hiking with my best friend. We get to explore new trails, I get a solid workout, all while enjoying real conversations and having a good time.
Putting It All Together
Good health is not perfect health. It is progress and balance in your daily habits. Make sure you pay attention to your body, and enjoy the journey to a healthier and happier you, while being sure to celebrate your successes (big and small)!
