Healthy Health Happier You

The Path to a Complementary Life

Hello, fitness pals! If it often seems that life is this nutty rollercoaster ride with lots of ups, downs, and loop-de-loops, you are not alone. We have all experienced this, and it is easy to forget that our health (physical and mental) contributes to this ride we are on. A healthier body can lead to a happier mind, which then leads to an emotionally happier YOU… so let’s get into how healthy health can lead to a happy YOU!

The Path to a Complementary Life

Learn the Basics

Before finding your groove in fitness program or eating plan, remember that health is all about the basics: nutrition, exercise, hydration and sleep. You can think of it like a house. You wouldn’t want a lovely rooftop over your home if the foundation is crumbling!! Let’s unpack this!

1. Nutrition: Fuel Your Fire

Pretend your body is a high-end performance sports car. Would you put low grade fuel in it? Of course not! Our body thrives with great nutrition. Consider bright colorful fruits, crunchy veggies, whole-grains and lean proteins. The point is, eating healthy doesn’t have to be dull. Put colors on your plate, play with herbs and spices, and have fun with cooking. For example, I have a few staple recipes that are dead simple but full of flavour. One of my faves is a rainbow quinoa bowl with grilled veggies, literally just toss it all together, season and go!

2. Exercise: Get Your Movement On!

Let’s now talk about exercise. Exercise is a word that sounds intimidating on its own, but it does not need to be! Movement can include anything from a short jog, dancing like no one is watching in your living room, or trying that funky new yoga, Pilates or kick boxing class your friend has been bugging you about. The important thing is to find what you love. For me, using my bicycle and finding new trails is a love of mine! It feels exhilarating – such a sense of freedom! And let me tell you, that rush of endorphins will also boost your mood!

3. Hydration: Keep the Product Flowing

Water is the unsung hero of health, people often forget that staying hydrated is essential for your body to function properly. Drinking enough water will maintain energy levels, keep your organs functioning properly, clear skin – the benefits of drinking enough water are endless! As a general rule of thumb, aim for 8 cups a day, or more while sweating! When I infuse my water with fruit like lemon, cucumber, or berries, I am really calling it a treat!

4. Sleep: The Unsung Hero

Do you think sleep is a luxury? Well, think again! Quality sleep is important to your health and wellbeing. Sleep is an important part of recovery, regulating our moods and cognitive function. Create a wind-down routine before bed—maybe this is disconnecting from electronics an hour before you plan to sleep. I find that winding down with a good book and some calming teas is helpful. You’ll be surprised how much your body— and mind—thank you for solid sleep!

Connect the Dots: Mind and Body

We must remember that our health journey is holistic. Physical health and mental well being go together: the more we take care of our body, the happier and more confidently we feel. There is a sweet irony here- working on our mental health can also be helpful for our physical health! Simple practices like mindfulness, journaling, or even talking with a friend can have an incredible impact on our mood and mindset. Like I said, I have overthought a few things and has healing a moment of conscious breathing or talking about my concerns has had healing effects.

Stay Inspired

Staying inspired for healthy health happier you is often the most difficult part of this entire life, and that is totally fine! Don’t forget improvements and outcomes take time, and it is about small, consistent, achievable steps. Set reasonable goals, and even celebrate the little victories along the way, whether that’s losing a couple of pounds, lifting a heavier weight, or feeling more lively and energetic.

It is also ok to have those days. I have pizza-and-a-movie nights that make me feel a little guilty, but hey, it’s all about balance! It is fine to indulge every now and then. The key is to come back more focused and determined than before.

Final Thoughts

Your journey toward a healthier and happier you is personal, and it’s simply about what works for your lifestyle… so nourish your body, mind and spirit, and remember to enjoy the journey! We are all trying to accomplish the same thing; to improve our wellbeing a little bit each day (remember, not perfection).

Enjoy the ride, be gentle with yourself, and let healthy health flourish and create a happier you!
