Starting Off on Your Fitness Journey

Welcome! If you are reading this, you are probably excited to start your fitness journey. This is fantastic! If you’ve tried before and hit a few bumps in the road or if you’re just starting to think about moving a little, just know you’re in the right spot. Let’s talk about for beginners fitness motivation and how to best utilize it for your own benefit – especially, if you’re just starting out!

The Reality: Everybody Starts Somewhere

Seriously, every fitness junky you admire was once a beginner. That friend who runs marathons or that coach that can shred massive weights? Yup. They too were once in your shoes and were wondering where to start! Remember, your fitness journey is a marathon, not a sprint. You need to accept where you are at and take one step at a time.

When I first got serious about getting fit, I was totally overwhelmed by all the information and workouts out there. I found it so frustrating! But what helped me most, was understanding that every little bit of movement counts and that I would make progress… If I showed up for myself, things would change. And they did!

Find Your “WHY”

Before you jump into workouts, take a moment to do some soul searching and figure out why you want to get fit. Do you want more energy or want to fitness motivation as a beginners? Are you hoping to fit into those jeans you have been yearning for? Maybe you just want to feel good in your skin. Whatever it is, make it personal to YOU.

Make a Vision Board

I know this sounds a little cheesy, but trust me! Visualizing your goals can create a strong source of motivation. Consider making a vision board that includes images and quotes that inspire you! You may want to include pictures of athletes, hiking destinations you want to visit, or a personal mantra that resonates with you. Hang this vision board where you are going to see it everyday and let it inspire you to put on those sneakers and get moving!

Start Small, Go Slow

This is a biggie. It is natural to want to go full throttle and plan 5 workouts a week of ridiculous intensity, but if you are new to working out, it can be much more sustainable to start slow and small. Set 2 or 3 goals of something short. A quick 20 minute brisk walk counts! Set goals that are reasonable and do not feel like chores. It is all about building consistency, not being perfect.

Make it Fun!

If every second of your workout feels miserable, you will probably not stick with it. The secret to staying motivated is to find activities you enjoy doing. Dancing? Yes! Biking? Yes! Hiking? Yes! Playing sports with friends? Yes again! These are all great ways to be active and not feel like it is a workout. Try out different classes or workouts to discover what will get you excited to move!

Get a Buddy

Exercising with a friend can be a game changer. Besides adding a social element to your fitness routine, you can motivate each other and hold each other accountable! Relying on your own willpower, plans can get pushed aside. If you make a pact with a friend to exercise together, you are much less likely to flake!

Recognize Small Wins

When you begin a fitness routine, you really need to celebrate the small wins along the way, because there will be many. Did you workout? Awesome! Did you walk an extra 500 steps today? High five! Any action forward is a positive action, and recognizing your progress is simply good for your confidence and motivation to keep building.

Enjoy the Ride

One last thing… remember that fitness is a journey, not a destination. There are days when you feel like you could take over the world, and then there are days when Netflix sounds a lot better than meeting your friend at the gym. And that is okay! Give yourself some grace. You are making changes that will benefit your mind and body for the long haul; focus on progress, not perfection.

So what are you waiting for? Get those sneakers on, smile on your face with our fitness motivation for beginners blog  and get ready for the awesome adventure ahead. You have got this!
