Letting Life be a Sporting Life: Enjoying Life through Fitness

Hello friends of fitness! Today, let’s have a closer look at living a embracing a joyful and active sporting life. You may ask “what in the world does that mean”? Living a sporting life doesn’t mean tracking all the reps I did or how many miles I’ve run, it’s about developing a life centered around movement, enjoyment, and community through sport.

What does a Sporting Life Mean?

It may look something like this: It’s a beautiful Saturday morning, instead of laying on the couch all day, you decide to meet some friends for an impromptu game of pickup basketball. Or maybe you decide to go for a hike with your family after the kids looked their selves off at home, it’s the middle of summer and you just want to enjoy the sun, laughter, and crazy adventures in the outdoors! These are components of living a sporting life, embracing and pursuing joy through movement, connection, and fun!

The Emotional Advantages of Being Active

Let’s be honest for a minute. Life is busy. With work, family and life’s many demands and responsibilities, it doesn’t take long to forget about physical activity. The thing that many people do not recognize is that participating in sport and engaging in physical activity has amazing emotional benefits! I for one, can tell you from personal experience that when i break a sweat the endorphin high after a workout always leaves me feeling energized and ready for the day.

Still not convinced? Research has shown that when we engage in physical activity, it makes us feel good because it releases endorphins, which are better known as the “happy” hormone. These little guys can help relieve stress and anxiety, as well as give you an emotional boost. So that glow you get, post-gym is not all in your head, there is a scientific reason behind it!

Finding Your Sport

First things first if you want to be a sportier person, you need to discover an enjoyable sport or activity. Think back to when you were a child, as that is likely the last time you participated in sport just because you enjoyed it. What sport or activity did you enjoy the most when you were a kid? Was it soccer, dancing, rollerblading around the neighborhood?

Advice to Get You Started:

  1. Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try! Take a local position class or round up your friends for a game of frisbee. You may uncover a hidden talent you didn’t know you had, like a passion for kayaking, or a natural ability to play ultimate Frisbee.
  2. Set reasonable goals: Trust yourself, it’s OK if you don’t start off running marathons. Start by setting small goals that you know you can achieve. Don’t make huge goals and expect them to work. Each small act can lead to successes those can lead to something bigger.
  3. Make it social: Include a friend or join a community group. Working out with others promotes a sense of community and accountability, and it is much more fun to post those sweaty post workout selfies!
  4. Listen to your body: This is an important one. Remember, it is about movement, not torture. Your body will tell you when it needs a break, so listen to it. A sporting life can be sustainable and enjoyable if you are good to yourself.

Getting Around Daily Hurdles

Well, I won’t kid ya – you’re probably going to face some hurdles. It could rain, your responsibilities to family might interrupt, or maybe you just don’t feel like it on some days. So what is it that makes daily exercise happen? Flexibility. If I break my workout survival kit out, I have a pair of resistance bands, a yoga mat, and a playlist of my favorite songs. So wherever I am, I can do a workout in the living room, park or even backyard!

Celebrate Your Wins!

Don’t forget to celebrate all of your little wins. You got off the couch and went for a walk? Celebrate. You tried a new sport? High five! Each step counts in your sporting life journey. Record your wins by keeping a journal, updating on social media or just patting yourself on the back.

The Bottom Line

So, as you continue your journey toward a sporting life, try to keep it fun, flexible and interesting. The most important thing is to enjoy the joyful factor of movement – After all, a active sporting life is about embracing the sweat, the laughter, and the relationships that physical activity brings.
