The Nutrition Science Myths: Let’s Clear Things Up

Hey, food enthusiasts! If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been in a world of confusion with different nutrition advice. It’s hard to keep track these days, right? One minute eggs are healthy, the next – eggs are bad. With all of the noise about nutrition science it is very easy to get lost in myths that seem unshakeable. So, pull up a chair, and We can take a look at some of the most common debunking myths with a friendly guide to the science of nutrition!

Nutrition Science Myths

Myth #1: Carbs are the enemy:

The classic villain in the nutrition story – the carbohydrates! We have all heard it before – “If I want to lose weight I need to cut carbs!” But the truth is that carbohydrates are our body’s main source of energy. So unless you plan on powering your day with sunshine and rainbows, you’ll need carbs. The key? Choosing the right carbs! Whole grain products, fruits, and vegetables are great carbohydrate sources and they are full of beneficial nutrients. So go ahead and eat that whole grain toast or apple.

Myth #2: Food Fats are Unhealthy:

Let’s introduce our next spotlight celebrity product: dietary fat. Fat has been bad for years, but we actually require healthy fats in our diet for brain functioning, nutrient absorption, and hormonal regulation. Items such as avocados, nuts, and olive oil are not only delicious, but they also play an important role in the food wheel. So don’t forgo that piece of avocado toast — it’s a health champion.

Myth #3: Gluten-Free is Better for Everyone:

Here’s a funny story: I once jumped onto the gluten-free diet. I figured that since it was trending, I figured this would be a healthy choice. But then, I discovered that gluten-free baked goods frequently contain an exorbitant amount of sugars and saturated fats, and I did a 180! The reality is, gluten isn’t bad for most. Gluten only causes an issue if someone has celiac disease or has gluten sensitivity. Unless you are one of those unfortunate people, enjoy your whole grain!

Myth #4: You Need to Detox Your Body:

Oh the great “detox.” We all want to think of cleansing and flushing, and for some reason this idea resonates with us! But our body already has detoxifiers — our liver and kidneys! They work phenomenally to keep us healthy. So instead of buying into the lemon-water cleanses or detox teas, support your body in its natural resolution with vibrantly colored, whole-based foods. Eat your fruits and veggies, and drink lots and lots of water; your body will thank you!

Myth #5: You Need to Take Supplements for Health:

I used to be a supplement junkie, you know — that person that believed that taking ten pills a day was the solution to good health. Absolutely, some people do require specific supplements — vitamin d in the winter months is a prime example. But most people can meet their nutrient needs through food. Food is more beneficial (and often more delicious) to provide for all nutritional needs. Plus, whole foods also provide extra benefits, such as fiber or antioxidants!

Let’s Wrap It Up!
