A Quick & Friendly Guide
Congratulations! You are making a foray into the fitness world! Whether you want to get stronger, feel better, or just want to have different energy, you are in the right spot. The great news is that I am here to help you navigate this exciting path! As someone who is also into fitness, I definitely understand that starting something new can be a little scary sometimes. On the bright side though, I have provided you with some basic fitness tips to help you get started for beginners that can make your experience in fitness feel size-able yet truly achievable and potentially even enjoyable!
1. Start Where You Are
As a beginner, first things first: take a deep breath and remember that you don’t have to dive right into the deep end! Remember that fitness is not a one-size-fits-all. It’s completely normal to begin small! It doesn’t matter if you are walking around the block or doing a few stretches around your home; just start where you are at! The key is to get started where you are comfortable. Trust me, it all adds up!
2. Set Reasonable Goals
Now that you’re ready to get started, let’s discuss goals. Instead of trying to go from couch to six-pack in six weeks (which, let’s be honest, is likely not going to happen), try to set reasonable goals. Try to exercise for 20 minutes three times a week. Or try just to have one more glass of water each day. Small, reasonable goals will motivate you, and allow you to feel less overwhelmed!
3. Find Activities That You Enjoy
Fitness doesn’t have to be going to the gym and lifting weights if that’s not for you. Try different activities and see what you enjoy. If you love dancing, try out a Zumba class! If being outside is more your thing, try hiking or cycling! I promise you that when you find an activity you love, exercise won’t feel like a chore, it will feel like a treat!
4. Move It or Lose It!
Moving during your daily life isn’t as challenging as you think. Instead of scrolling through social media on your lunch break, take a quick walk. Take the stairs instead of the elevator- every action counts! These may be little changes, but they will increase your energy and help your overall fitness. They don’t require much additional time!
5. Be Kind to Yourself
Here’s a little tip to digest: everybody has to start somewhere, and everyone (even trainers!) has days where they falter too! Whether it is one missed workout, too much pizza, or indulging in too many fish ‘n’ chips, ultimately it does not matter. Fitness is a marathon, not a sprint! It’s about treating yourself with kindness and understanding that your progress is not always linear. Be sure to highlight the tiny victories along the way (i.e., finished your walk; tried a workout for the very first time) and remind yourself to be kind as you grow.
6. Hydrate
Water is your best friend! Staying hydrated is vital for your overall well-being and can seriously improve performance in your workouts! Aim for a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day, and you should also hydrate before, during, and after your workouts. Staying hydrated will help increase your energy and take you to a better place mentally.
7. Connect
Remember, you do not have to do this alone! Connecting with friends or a fitness group can make the experience much more enjoyable! Having a buddy to workout with can help to provide the motivation and accountability you might need once in a while. It can also just be nicer to do things with someone and share your successes and encourage each other!
8. Rest Will ALWAYS Be Important!
Let’s be clear, just as important as your workouts are the times when you take a break! Your body needs to recover and repair, and you have nothing to feel guilty about by taking a break or having a day with less exercise. Try to have planned rest days and/or have additional sessions of recovery in the form of yoga or stretching.
